Project objectives

With the Integrated Project "INTERSHIP" EuroYards intend to supply a significant contribution to the goals of the European Maritime Sector, as described in the Project "LeaderSHIP 2015" by CESA, the European Shipbuilders Association. The following objectives will be addressed:

-> Increasing significantly the competitiveness of European cruise and ferry shipbuilders

-> Development of better products, considering the entire life cycle of complex ships

-> Drastical reduction of building and development cost as well as time-to-market of innovative solutions

Increasing significantly the competitiveness of European cruise and ferry shipbuilders

The following goals are set to achieve this objective:

  • achieve a worldwide market share of
    • 95% in cruise vessels and
    • 60% in RoPax vessels and ferries (90% of inner EU traffic).

InterSHIP will thus contribute to meeting the forecasted increase of passenger transport by 24% by 2010 and to improve environmentally friendly and efficient inner European maritime transport.

Development of better products, considering the entire life cycle of complex ships

In line with the main goals of the shipbuilding industry::

  • obtain optimum design solutions and product quality considering environment, safety, comfort and efficiency;
  • reduce emissions from the ships concerned by 25 - 50%
  • reduce accidents with the ships concerned to virtually "0"
  • reduce the life cycle cost of the ships concerned by 30 - 40%.

InterSHIP contributes to achieve these goals by:
  • better exploitation of leading edge knowledge in design and production
  • development of optimisation criteria, tools and methods covering the entire life cycle
  • integrating shipyards, suppliers, owners and classification societies in the development process of modern ships

Drastic reduction of building and development cost as well as time-to-market of innovative solutions

The following goals are set to achieve this objective:

  • reduce development and building cost by 25-30%
  • reduce lead time and time-to-market by 20-30%

InterSHIP contributes to achieve these goals by:
  • improving vertical integration between shipyards, owners, suppliers and classification societies
  • enhancing horizontal integration by better cooperation between the EU shipbuilders
  • supporting modularisation and standardisation as a key for larger specialisation
  • demonstrating feasibility and prepare the field for a wide application of project results.
